We are currently designing our Educational Services program. We will integrate educational resources into our Food Assistance program so that clients receiving food assistance can work towards long-term financial independence. We are always looking for new ideas and people to help design, develop, and teach classes! Some of the classes that we plan to offer include:
Literacy and English as a Second Language
We will partner with Literacy Austin to provide one-to-one basic literacy and small group English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction with the help of volunteer tutors. If you are interested in teaching literacy now, please volunteer with Literacy Austin. 29% of East Austinites age 5 and older claim to speak English “less than very well.”
We hope to partner with the Sustainable Food Center to offer nutritious cooking classes to our clients. The classes will focus on creating nutritious meals using the same food that we provide through our food pantry.
GED preparation (for a high school equivalency diploma)
GED prep classes will help clients become more marketable in the work force. Currently, 54% of East Austin residents over the age of 25 have not attained their high school diploma.
Other classes that we would like to offer in the future include:
- Financial education
- Life skills
- Job skills
- Computer literacy
- Voter education
- Music education
- Art education
- College preparation
We are very interested in your ideas. If you have an idea for a class, or would like to help develop, organize, or teach classes, please e-mail email@example.com.
