Meet Chandra Simms, New Executive Director

Over the winter break, Eastside Community Connection welcomed Chandra Simms as the new Executive Director! The interview below is just a peak at her interesting life and her views about giving back to the community. We’re excited to have Chandra as part of our team and look forward to working on new projects with her this semester.

Basics

  • Hometown: Denton, Texas
  • Education: I studied Dance and Drama at Texas Women’s University, History and International Studies at the University of North Texas, Non-Profit Administration at Western Michigan University, British History and Politics in London, and Mandarin Chinese at Tung Hai University in Taiwan.
  • Non-profit Experience: While in Michigan for graduate school, I worked as the Program Manager for the Center for Asian Studies at Kalamazoo College. This experience inspired me to focus my career on education and social service non-profits. After moving back to Texas, I was the Associate Director of a non-profit (similar to ECC) in Dallas that provided ESL and computer literacy classes to immigrants and refugees. We also provided a support system to minorities with their entrepreneurial endeavors. Then, I moved on to Planned Parenthood where I did fundraising. After that, I became a consultant for non-profits, and in my spare time I led study tours for high school students, teaching British History, Art History, and American History in England, New York, Washington, D.C., France, and Italy. Prior to joining ECC, I was the Volunteer Director at Ride On Center for Kids (ROCK) in Georgetown where I supervised over 350 active volunteers per week.

What drew you to Eastside Community Connection?

During college, I was a student leader, actively involved in student government and several other student organizations. So naturally, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with students who are aspiring young adult leaders. Now, I get to help college students learn about non-profits and play a role in fostering their desire to be active in our community. My hope is that when they have gone through ECC and graduated from college, that they still maintain that desire and recognize the importance of giving back to society.

What are you the most excited about this year?

I am very excited about working with the spring interns and helping them develop and grow their respective programs. Some of my short-term goals include networking and expanding ECC’s name recognition in the community and creating new fundraising initiatives. Long-term, I want to grow ECC’s programs and increase its capacity to serve East Austin.

Do you have any advice for students considering a career in the non-profit sector?

While you are still in school, take advantage of the business classes that are offered. Non-profits are always looking for ways and opportunities to fundraise.

Also, I would highly recommend getting involved by volunteering, and of course, through internships. Get as much of diversified experience as you can—try not to get stuck playing one role.

Finally, and most importantly, just follow your heart!

2011 Holiday Fundraiser Drive Donors

Thanks to everyone who donated to the Eastside Community Connection 2011 Holiday Fundraising Drive. Your support and contribution will continue to make a significant impact on the lives we touch in the East Austin community through adult education programs and food pantry services.

Our aim this year was to raise $10,000 in order to maintain and expand our services for 2012. With your help, we exceeded our own expectations and managed to raise $12,001.98!

Once again, on behalf of everyone at ECC, thank you for your generosity during this past holiday season.

UPDATE (January 18, 2012): Eastside Community Connection wants to thank everyone who donated to its Holiday Fundraising Drive. Your support continues to help make a difference in the East Austin community.

Please join us this year in supporting Eastside Community Connection during its annual holiday fundraising drive.

Eastside Community Connection is a truly unique nonprofit organization.  Aside from the Executive Director, the organization is completely volunteer-run and the volunteer base is comprised entirely of college students.

These talented and dedicated individuals learn to develop and administer services to deal with the very real problems of poverty, education and hunger in our area: they distribute items from ECC’s food bank to needy families, conduct adult education classes on-site for residents seeking to create a better life for themselves, and provide a critical support network to families who have fallen on hard times.  Student-created hunger-relief and teaching programs have benefited over 1,500 Austin families this year alone.  And the need keeps growing.

Our goal this year is to raise $10,000 to maintain and expand our services during the year. The support of individuals such as yourself will be what allows us to continue serving thousands of nearby families and engaging hundreds of students in community service that will pay immeasurable dividends for years to come.

We hope you will consider a donation of $10, $25, $50, $100 or $500 to Eastside Community Connection during this holiday season. Consider skipping buying a cup of coffee or bringing your own lunch from home and making a modest donation instead.

Any amount will help make a difference during these difficult times. Thank you for your support.

Updates From the Interns

Our student interns work hard to keep Eastside Community Connection running. Read about what some of them have been working on this past month. Also, if you’re interested in becoming an intern for the Spring 2012 semester, check out the available positions here!

Food Pantry

With the holidays quickly approaching, the pantry is in full swing and operating at max service capacity. The recent new additions to office space fortunately give the pantry some much-needed square footage, but we still can’t grow fast enough! Hopefully, with the added inventory space, we can increase daily serving capacity. We just can’t seem to keep food on the shelves or the front door open long enough to get to everyone one in need. We’re very lucky to be receiving the collection of canned goods care of the UT Community Nutrition Class’s Food Drive, an anticipated donation of 2000 pounds of much-needed food.

ESL Program

The ESL Program is getting a fresh start this semester with new director Eric Nikolaides, a second year Spanish and Linguistics major at UT.  The classes will continue to be held at Memorial United Methodist Church in East Austin, but a new curriculum has been developed that aims to take greater advantage of the students’ already-acquired knowledge of Spanish.  The new curriculum will try to combine a more theoretical approach to the English language (similar to how an English speaker would learn Spanish in school) with a much more practical approach that can teach the students English phrases that they can use the day they learn them in class. Currently, the ESL program is seeking one or two more student volunteers to assist in recruiting for the classes, planning lessons, and teaching.

Volunteer Update

We have received an oustanding level of support from the UT community this past month including several organizations who have provided hours of service at the food pantry. Special thanks to Alpha Phi Omega, the Texas Lassos, Texas Cowboys, Texas Lone Stars, Iron Spikes, UT Advertising Graduate Council, Lending Hearts and the Texas Nutrition program for providing us with hard working volunteers. We will continue to look for more organizations to involve in our mission and work with us toward our goals.

Grants and Move-In Update

We have just recently completed the first step in the grant application process for the Long Foundation. We should be hearing if we have been invited to complete the second step of the process in December. Also, an application we completed over the summer has been approved and Charity Bash will be throwing a fundraising party on ECC’s behalf sometime next summer! In other news, the move into the new office space has gone well! Not only do the interns have a large space to work in now, but we have also created more room in the pantry for food items and made the interview room more wheelchair accessible.
